Misconceptions around data law ‘putting fear' into organisations

A lack of knowledge, combined with cultural barriers, misconceptions and concerns from the most senior levels within an organisation are "putting fear into people" when it comes to using and sharing data, according to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Stacey Egerton says that the Data Protection Act can instil fear around sharing data, and privacy is often an afterthought. "When you're trying to do something positive, it's incredibly frustrating," with people "hitting a brick wall," says Egerton in her presentation to the Digital Authority Forum.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) aims to allay these fears and break down some of the misconceptions.
