Data Mining is the iterative an interactive process of discovering valid, novel, useful and understandable knowledge (patterns, models, rules etc.) in very large databases. Its foundation comprises three intertwined scientific disciplines, namely; Statistics (the numeric study of data relationships); Artificial intelligence (human-like intelligence displayed by software and/or machines) and Machine learning (algorithms that can learn from data to make predictions).
There is an enormous amount of data obtainable in industries and other entities around the world. These data are of no use until they are transformed into useful information. It is essential to analyse the enormous amount of data and extract useful information from them.
Extraction of information is not the only process needed to be performed; data mining also involves other processes such as Data Cleaning, Data Integration, Data Transformation, Data Mining, Pattern Evaluation and Data Presentation. Once all these processes are applied, the information retrieved can be used in many applications such as Market Analysis, Production Control, Fraud Detection, Science Exploration, etc.
This workshop offers SMEs the opportunity to understand the relevance of data mining tools in analysing and gaining insight from their organisation data.
