DISCOVER - Skills for Carers

Project timeframe: April 2012 - March 2015

The DISCOVER pan European project is funded under CIP-ICT-PSP (2011: 3.2) call and is focused on increasing digital skills of carers and those they care for to support them in their caring role. It is challenging existing practices to create accessible technical solutions for better care provision through unique training methodologies and use of ICT solutions. The novel virtual learning environment is also addressing employability issues by letting people build a transferable learning portfolio that can prove achievement to future employers or learning institutions.

The DISCOVER platform brings together skills and care into a learning environment that looks at how technology can help carers to communicate and care better and create learning pathways that help to improve day to day life and preparing for the future. The DISCOVER service is based on Living Lab methodology and user led design with four pilot sites in Greece, Spain, UK and Netherlands reaching 400 informal and formal carers, some of whom will become mentors for the older people they care for.

Key aspects of innovation are centred on the use of informal & flexible learning strategy and bitesize content to engage people that have little time and enable them to learn at a pace to suit them; delivering new ways of training through mobile content, serious games or scenarios, offered on all new and emerging channels (ipTV, mobile phone, computer) and supporting learning opportunities through a community of practice and learner centric social networking tool.
