The Foundry approach

This animation shows how we’re delivery change at Birmingham City Council in a faster, more collaborative and outcome-focused way.

This is the Foundry approach.

The Foundry was created because we needed a new way of working. It gives staff at every level the chance to bring forward ideas to improve the way we work. Through sprints, workshops and hands-on collaboration, the Foundry shapes those ideas into solutions, putting users at the heart of design from day one.

The intranet project shows how this works in practice. We started with a costly and outdated intranet that was difficult to use. From there, the project went through the full cycle: idea, prototype, delivery.

By bringing together content designers, SharePoint specialists, service leads and end users, the Foundry intranet team built a new intranet that’s simpler and easier to use. It’s more than a new platform—it’s proof that collaborative thinking and agile working deliver real results.

As more projects move through the Foundry, confidence in this way of working is growing. It’s about working smarter, staying close to the needs of our residents and staff, and turning good ideas into meaningful change.
